Concussion - Potential Martial Arts Injury

A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that some martial artists experience. Martial artists can suffer concussions during training due to strikes to the head, being thrown and hitting their head on the ground, etc. Martial arts instructors, parents and students should be aware of the signs of a possible concussion in order to seek proper medical attention for the injured individual. Instructors should also ensure proper safety protocols are taken during all sparring and training sessions (i.e. requiring all students to wear protective headgear and mouthguards).

According to the Mayo Clinic, concussions can cause "headaches and problems with concentration, memory, balance and coordination". Moreover, a person who experiences numerous concussions over the years may suffer long-term and/or severe mental damage.

This site does not provide medical advice. If you get hurt or are in pain, please see a doctor!!! It is very difficult to self-diagnosis. You should always have a medical professional examine any injury. For other potential injuries, please visit the wiki's Martial Arts Injuries section.
