Knuckle Punch or Knuckle Strike

This page provides details on how to do the Knuckle Punch, Knuckle Strike, One Knuckle Punch, Extended Middle Knuckle Punch, etc. This martial arts punch involves striking a small target with an extended middle knuckle. In Karate, this striking technique is known as Nakadaka Ken.

Other extended knuckle punches include the extended index knuckle punch (also known as Ippon Ken or Shark Tooth Punch). For more punches & strikes, visit our main Punches & Strikes page.

Details for this Punch

  • Start by curling your fingers down into a fist.
  • Then untuck your middle finger until the last knuckle of your middle finger is even with the second knuckle of your ring finger and pointer finger.
  • You can reinforce your extended knuckle with your thumb. Place the side of your thumb on the first knuckle of your middle finger.
  • You can strike forward with this fist against a target. Less effective against hard/bony targets.
  • You can also punch down on the back of the hand that is holding you in order to force an attacker to release you.
