Written Instructions for Shorin-Ryu Kata Pinan 2 (or Pinan Nidan)

0. Kamai (soto-hachiji shizentai-dachi: open leg natural stance) - Left foot steps left to make feet shoulder width apart, each foot facing 45-degrees out. Fists raise to hips, then press downward so that the arms hang straight down naturally. The elbows are relaxed; the fists are placed slightly away from the body and the distance between them is one and one-half fists.
1. 90 degree turn left (face 9:00) to left cat stance, left hammerfist. Right foot steps directly forward one foot’s length, right arm raises parallel to floor at shoulder level with elbow bent 90-degrees. As feet pivot into left cat stance, left hand raises through elbow of right arm to execute left hammerfist strike.
2. Step to right walking stance, right middle punch. Right foot steps forward into right walking stance, right middle punch.
3. 180-degree turn right to right long stance, right lower technique. Break down into cat stance (pull right foot back), bringing hands to right high-low defend. Move right foot directly behind you, allowing your hips to face forward so you can place your right foot facing 3:00. Snap hips to right, pivoting left foot on ball, into right long stance, execute right lower technique, chamber left fist against side at chest level.
4. Retract to right cat stance, right hammerfist. See details for 1. No turn, retract right foot to cat stance instead.
5. Step to left walking stance, left middle punch. See details for 2.
6. 90-degree turn left (face 12:00) to left long stance, left lower technique. Break down into cat stance, bringing hands to left high-low defend, step left foot diagonally to face 12:00. Snap hips to square, pivot right foot on ball, into left long stance, execute left lower technique, chamber right fist against side at chest level.
7. Step to right walking stance, right upper technique. Right foot steps forward to right walking stance, left high-low defend. Right upper technique.
8. Step to left walking stance, left upper technique. See details for 7.
9. Step to right walking stance, right upper technique. See details for 7.
10. 270-degree turn (face 3:00) to left long stance, left lower technique. Break down into cat stance (pull left foot in), left hand to high defend, right hand punches across body low, body pivots (face 7:30). Bring left foot to right foot then step out to 3:00. Snap hips left to square, pivoting right foot on ball, into left long stance, execute left lower technique, chamber right fist against side at chest level.
11. Step to right walking stance, right middle punch. Right foot steps to right walking stance, right middle punch.
12. 180-degree turn (face 9:00) to right long stance, right lower technique. Break down into cat stance (pull right foot back), bringing hands to right high-low defend. Move right foot directly behind you, allowing your hips to face forward so you can place your right foot facing 9:00. Snap hips to right, pivoting left foot on ball, into right long stance, execute right lower technique, chamber left fist against side at chest level.
13. Step to left walking stance, left middle punch. See details for 11.
14. 90-degree turn left (face 6:00) to left long stance, left lower technique. Break down into cat stance, bringing hands to left high-low defend, step left foot diagonally to face 6:00. Snap hips to square, pivot right foot on ball, into left long stance, execute left lower technique, chamber right fist against side at chest level.
15. Step to right walking stance, right high punch, KIAI. Right foot steps to right walking stance, right high punch, KIAI.
16. Step to left walking stance, left high punch. See details for 15. No KIAI.
17. Step to right walking stance, right high punch. See details for 16. No KIAI.
18. 270-degree turn left (face 9:00) to left cat stance, double lower knife-hand technique. Extend left hand to front. Turn from the head, down. Turn head left to look right. Upper body follows head left and left foot swings back in an arc to step to left cat stance (face 9:00). Movement starts at the top of the body and moves down. Execute double lower knife hand technique.
19. Step right to face 10:30 to right cat stance, double lower knife-hand technique. Bring heel of left foot to ground, as right foot steps forward at 45-degree angle out into right cat stance. Hands sweep backward in tight counter-clockwise circular motion to perform double lower knife-hand technique. Body is at 45-degree angle (face 10:30).
20. 135-degree turn right (face 3:00) to right cat stance, double lower knife-hand technique. Hands sweep forward and right as right foot steps directly back (past left foot) to face 3:00. Pivot to right cat stance to perform double lower knife hand.
21. Step left to face 1:30 to left cat stance, double lower knife-hand technique. See details for 19.
22. Kamai - Fists move to hips as left foot steps back to initial kamai position. Hands press down to initial kamai position.
