Shotokan Kata - Taikyoku Yondan (Kihon Kata)

This page provides videos and instructions for Shotokan Karate kata "Taikyoku Yondan". These tools will help you prepare for your next belt test. Written step-by-step instructions for this kihon kata are at the bottom of the page.

This kata is similar to Shotokan Taikyoku Shodan but it uses high punches and high blocks (versus middle punches and downward blocks). This introductory kata is used by some Shotokan schools as a tool for color belt students. Taikyoku Yondan is also known as a kihon kata. To master Shotokan Karate katas, you will also have to learn basic Shotokan stances, Karate kicks, Karate blocks, Karate punches, etc.

  • Ready stance
  • Turn left 90 degrees, left front stance, left high block
  • Step forward, right front stance, right high punch
  • Turn right 180 degrees, right front stance, right high block
  • Step forward, left front stance, left high punch
  • Turn left 90 degrees, left front stance, left high block
  • Step forward, right front stance, right high block
  • Step forward, left front stance, left high block
  • Step forward, right front stance, right high block, yell Kiai
  • Turn left 270 degrees, left front stance, left high block
  • Step forward, right front stance, right high punch
  • Turn 180 degrees, right front stance, right high block
  • Step forward, left front stance, left high punch
  • Turn left 90 degrees, left front stance, left high block
  • Step forward, right front stance, right high punch
  • Step forward, left front stance, left high punch
