Suffrajitsu - Martial Arts & Women's Right To Vote In the early 1900s, British women were protesting for the right to vote. These women were known as Suffragettes. However, they were met with many cases of police brutality. For self-defense, these women were taught Jujutsu (Jujitsu) by Edith Garrud. The term Suffrajitsu combines the words Suffragette and Jujitsu. In addition to their Jujutsu training, the women would often use Indian exercise clubs (traditionally used for strength training & conditioning) as self-defense weapons in order to counter police batons. For additional women self-defense information, please visit the main Women & Self-Defense section. Suffrajitsu
