Instructions for the Upkick - Martial Arts Kicking Technique The Upkick is a technique utilized primarily in Mixed Martial Arts and self-defense situations. The upkick is a highly effective technique to use if you have been knocked to the ground and you are on your back (i.e. in the Guard Position). As the standing opponent approaches to attack, the martial arts student (while on their back) will fire the upkick from either or both legs upwards at the standing opponent's head. The kick is usually fired straight up with the heel of the foot and targets the chin or face of the standing opponent. However, it can be executed from any angle and with any part of the foot. For instructions on other kicking techniques, please visit the main Martial Arts Kicks section. Demonstration Videos for the Upkick
