This stretch focuses on your Latissimus Dorsi (or Lats). The Latissimus Dorsi is the large V-shaped muscle that runs down your back from your shoulders to your hips. This muscle is often engaged and extended during martial arts punching and grappling techniques. The wall lat stretch is also used by martial artists in order to stretch their lat muscles before performing strength training exercises such as Lat Pulldowns, Seated Cable Rows, etc. All stretches and exercises should be supervised by a trained instructor in order to prevent injuries and to ensure the proper technique is utilized. If you have had an injury or are in pain, please see a doctor before starting any stretching or exercise program. For additional back stretches, please visit the main Martial Arts Stretches section.
