Instructions for World Oyama Karate Kata - Kihon Sono Hachi

Written Kata Instructions

First of all, I have to mention that there is a particularity that must be understood for the kihon kata. 
If you watch the video, you should notice a transition stance on most move followed with zenkutsu dachi, 
gyaku tsuki. Therefore, this transition stance I will use in my description is similar to han kiba dashi at 45° 
with the front leg standing on the ball of the foot.

Kihon Sono Hachi

  • “Kihon Sono Hachi, Yoi” – into fudo dachi.
  • Ichi: Start in jodan kamae and kick right ushiro geri – kiai backward.
  • Ni: Put your foot down backward and strike shuto jodan uchi uke, grab with your right hand and strike tettsui oroshi ganmen uchi – kiai.
  • San: Strike left hiza geri – kiai.
  • Chi: Pivot 180° on your right foot into left kokutsu dachi, shuto mawashi uke – ibuki.
  • Go: Step forward into right kiba dachi and strike uraken mawashi uchi.
  • Pivot on your feet into right zenkutsu dachi 45° while striking seiken gyaku tsuki.
  • Roku: Grab with both hands and strike left hiza geri – kiai. Put your foot down forward into left han zenkutsu dachi 45°, kamaete.
  • Shichi: Step forward into left kiba dachi and strike uraken mawashi uchi.
  • Pivot on your feet into left zenkutsu dachi 45° while striking seiken gyaku tsuki.
  • Hachi: Grab with both hands and strike right hiza geri – kiai.
  • Put your foot down forward into right han zenkutsu dachi 45°, kamaete.
  • Ku: Block left shuto jodan uke, move your right foot to the left, then your left foot backward to the right in order to pivot 180° into right kiba dachi. During the movement, perform a throw with your right hand (the whole sequence is similar to the judo throwing technique seoi nage).
  • Strike left seiken gedan tsuki, then right seiken gedan tsuki – kiai.
  • Jû: Move your right foot forward into right han zenkutsu dachi 45°, kamaete – ibuki.
  • Ichi: Step forward into left kiba dachi, strike uraken mawashi uchi and block seiken gedan barai.
  • Pivot on your feet into left zenkutsu dachi 45° while striking seiken gyaku tsuki.
  • Ni: Step forward into right kiba dachi, strike uraken mawashi uchi and block seiken gedan barai.
  • Pivot on your feet into right zenkutsu dachi 45° while striking seiken gyaku tsuki.
  • San: Perform kake ashi dachi, jodan kamae and kick right kansetsu geri.
  • Put your foot down into transition stance and strike right uraken sayu ganmen uchi.
  • Pivot on your feet into zenkutsu dachi while striking chudan gyaku tsuki – kiai.
  • Chi: Kick left mae geri and put your foot down forward.
  • Step forward into kake ashi dachi, pivot on your feet into right kiba dachi and strike jodan yoko tettsui.
  • Go: Grab with both hands, strike left hiza geri – kiai and put your foot down forward into left han zenkutsu dachi, kamaete.
  • Roku: Perform mawate into right kokutsu dachi, shuto mawashi uke – ibuki.
  • Shichi: Move your right foot into right zenkutsu dachi and point with seiken jodan gyaku tsuki.
  • Strike seiken jodan oi tsuki, seiken chudan gyaku tsuki and seiken chugan oi tsuki – kiai.
  • Hachi: Step forward into left han zenkutsu dachi – okuri ashi, kamaete – kiai.
  • “Yame” – step back into fudo dachi.
